I often get asked what fish look like on sonar when they are on the bottom of the lake. In this short review, I will try to highlight what to look for. In the picture, there is a school of spotted bass on the very bottom of the lake bed. Look closely - arches can be seen within the structure on the bottom. In addition, look at a couple of the fish that have gone back down to the bottom - they can still be seen after they enter the structure again. This school of fish reacted to a jigging spoon dropped on them and can be seen streaking upward to the incoming spoon. Different graphs and manufacturers have different color palettes that can be used on your sonar. This is a standard palette on the Humminbird Helix units. I like this color because you can often see an orange or red color in the middle of the arch, which signifies the air bladder of the fish. Next time you see something that looks like this on your graph, put a spoon or drop shot into it - you might come out with a big load of spotted bass!Â.
